After Instagram Reels, Instagram has come up with a new feature called “Instagram Lite”. The most used social media platform Instagram has planned to start with a new feature “Instagram Lite” in India. Instagram on Wednesday said it is testing the ‘Instagram Lite’ app in India that claims to occupy less space on Android phones and consumes very little data before it is launched officially. Unleashed by Vishal Shah, VP of Product, Instagram, at the Facebook Fuel for India, Instagram Lite app is being tested by Facebook in India through the virtual event on Wednesday. It will amaze the people to know that this app comes in less than 2 MB in size which means less storage consumption in your phone. Over the months, Facebook-owned company has tested many features in India including its short video feature named Reels. According to Vishal Shah, India is an important market place for them and has been a testing spot for discovery. He added that ‘Instagram Lite’ is less than two megabytes in size, and has been built with an intension to provide access and a high-quality experience to users in India, irrespective of the device, platform, and network that they are on.
Instagram Lite, which is newly made especially for Android users, is designed to offer the core Instagram experience, except for some features including Reels, Shopping, and IGTV. Although there will be a lot of similarities between the former and the Lite version, there are some features that are not supported in Lite as Reels, IGTV, Shopping, etc. Instagram had already tested a similar experience through the original Instagram Lite app in 2018, and the new Instagram Lite claims to deliver efficient speed, performance, and responsiveness. For people’s convenience, Instagram Lite is available in several Indian languages like Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu. Just like Facebook Lite that was launched in 2009, Facebook has now introduced Instagram Lite App that will make Instagram interface more attractive and convenient for users.
A lot of trends keep emerging in India which acts as an accelerator to other innovations and inventions to start up. Shah perceived that India is a country that is one of the best platforms to set global trends as well with two out of the five songs shared most globally on Reels coming from Indian artists. He also noticed that many people were fond of going live and chatting through video calls than normal chats which is why India is one of the first countries where Instagram Live rooms are launched. Now up to four people can go live together on Instagram and chat via video calls by creating a live room.
“With the test of Instagram Lite and the next edition of Born on Instagram, we’re aiming to democratize creation and creativity for a greater number of people in India. We’re also hoping to gain valuable insights before a global rollout of Instagram Lite,” Shah said.
